Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding experiences a body can go through. As ligaments loosen, posture shifts to accommodate a growing bump, and the nervous system works harder than ever, it's no surprise that discomfort is a near-universal part of the experience. Yet pregnancy massage remains one of the most misunderstood and underutilised therapies available to expectant mothers.

This guide covers everything you need to know about pregnancy massage — when it's safe, what to expect, and why so many of my clients wish they'd started sooner.

When Can You Start?

I offer pregnancy massage from 15 weeks onwards for low-risk pregnancies. The first trimester (0–12 weeks) is typically avoided as a precaution, not because massage is necessarily harmful, but because miscarriage risk is highest in this period and most therapists prefer to wait.

From 15 weeks into the second trimester, and throughout the third trimester, pregnancy massage is generally very safe and enormously beneficial — provided there are no complications such as placenta praevia, pre-eclampsia, deep vein thrombosis, or a high-risk pregnancy classification. Always check with your midwife or GP if you have any concerns.

How is Pregnancy Massage Different?

Pregnancy massage requires specific training and a genuine understanding of prenatal anatomy. It differs from a standard massage in several key ways:

  • Positioning — from around 20 weeks, lying flat on your back is not recommended as it can compress the vena cava. I use pregnancy positioning aids (supportive pillows and a special cushion system) so you can lie comfortably on your side throughout the session.
  • Pressure and technique — certain areas and pressure points are avoided or modified. Deep tissue work on the lower legs is contraindicated in pregnancy. I adapt every technique based on your specific stage and needs.
  • Oils — I use pregnancy-safe oils. Some essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy, and I ensure all products used are appropriate for expectant mothers.
  • Communication — I ask more questions at the start of a pregnancy massage session, and throughout. Your comfort and feedback guides everything.

What Are the Benefits?

Research into pregnancy massage consistently points to a range of measurable benefits:

  • Reduction in lower back and hip pain (among the most common pregnancy complaints)
  • Relief from sciatic nerve pain, which often develops in the third trimester
  • Reduced swelling in the legs, feet and ankles through improved circulation and gentle lymphatic work
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Reduction in cortisol (stress hormone) levels
  • Increased serotonin and dopamine — associated with improved mood and reduced anxiety
  • A sense of nurturing connection with your body and your growing baby

What About After Birth?

Postnatal massage — in the weeks and months after birth — is equally valuable. Your body has been through enormous physical change, and postnatal massage can help with recovery, muscle tension from feeding positions, and the general exhaustion of new motherhood.

I'm happy to discuss postnatal massage during a prenatal session, or you can get in touch after baby arrives. There's no hard rule on timing — it depends on your birth experience, recovery, and how you're feeling.
